Thoughts on the games this weekend;
For me Sunday nights game against Guildford i think is best described as frustrating, something i would imagine the players felt also. Watching the game from the 'shop floor' as to speak, a lot of passes were only cm's away from connecting and i think the team is still working out who is going to be where and when. Everybody seems to be working hard and the frustration of the guys when they swap shifts is evident to see, and that shows they want to win just as much as everyone else does in the crowd.

i agree that the team are still 'gelling' but its frustrating when the 'referee' calls penalties that no one in the crowd sees.. andy mckinney 2+2 for roughing is quite correct dean holland 5 + game for slashing ?? did anyone else see it ?? dan croft last week game for roughing???

Hollands 'game' for slashing, was i am informed, due to him slashing a player who was sitting on Guildfords bench and not actually on the ice, agree about the pens but that always has and always will be the same.

I wasn't at the game so I can't comment on the performance but I think we need to judge the team after 40 games, not 4. The potential is there for all to see, it's not easy to get a win at the Spectrum but last weekend we managed it.
As for the comments about the referee, yes they do make bad decisions, but over the course of a season it tends to even out. There will be times when our opponents are given a dodgy penalty.

[quote author=backinthegame board=general thread=372 but its frustrating when the 'referee' calls penalties that no one in the crowd sees..
Since when did the crowd have to see it before the referee (who incidentally is far better informed and placed ) can call the penalty??

i didnt say the crowd have to see it ... but half the time the 'the three blind mice' miss blatant slashing/ tripping / cross checking ( ie James Knight in the challenge game v Swindon ). when i first starting watching 25 years ago yeah the officials made mistakes but they seem to let things go nowadays !

This thread could and may well go on for ever. As a former player, at Ice level you see a lot more of what is happening, the sly dig in the ribs or poke in the calf, always done when the referee is looking elsewhere. In fairness to the officials, it's true thatthey can't see everything all of the time and are probably the most thickest skinned people out on the ice. Its the same in any sport though, there will always be someone in the crowd that will see something that the referee misses and it stands to reason that the referee will see things that the fans miss, simply due to his location. I still agree though ... some strange calls on Sunday.

Polite advice: avoid blaming the ref - that way leads to madness. The team who scores more goals wins.

Thanks for the advice however, I was leaning on the side of the referee in my post.

How do you know I'm not a former legend? In my own lunchtime, certainly.

The badge of "legend" (something that I have never considered myself as) ... makes no difference. What I'm saying is, referees will always make seemingly bad calls as they see things from a different perspective, a perspective that those of us in the stands can not always see. We had some shocking calls in our favour last season and there were a few shockers called against us. Tom Watkins' sending off at Sheffield springs to mind! ... even prompted me to write and complain to the governing body!

Just so, Brav607. Swings and roundabouts. Only trying to spare you from the desease that affects another game forum where the prevailing wisdom is one particular stripey is responsible for the team's (crap) results week-on-week.
